The studio will be closed Monday, February 15th for Family Day. The studio will be open on Saturday, February 13th.
- Late arrivals will not be admitted into the class/studio. We are sorry that you will have missed your time but we need to enforce this to ensure proper Covid-19 protocols are followed. If you are finding that your class time is too tight for you to arrive on time, please check our schedule for a class that may work better for you.
- For the duration of this order we will refrain from hands on cueing until it is deemed safe to do so.
- Upon arrival, the studio will be locked. A few minutes prior to the start of your class, the door will be propped open by an instructor. Once the instructor has moved behind the desk, the person at the front of the line may move into the dedicated waiting spot that has been marked in tape on the floor (this spot is to be used ONLY at that time the door has been opened, otherwise it will block the bathroom key/sanitation area). The instructor will let you know when to come in, as to make sure we are not over-capacity inside the entry area. You will be asked to sign a COVID-19 attestation, sanitize your hands and proceed promptly to your designated work out area. The instructor will then lock the door after all clients are into the studio. Upon exiting you will also be guided to gather your personal items and exit through the propped open door to minimize the amount of people in the front entrance area.
- In addition to spraying down the equipment after your session, we have added an additional step for clients to “wet wipe” the spray down to spread the detergent uniformly over the area (not to dry).
- A reminder as the weather gets cooler to bring minimal amounts of personal items into the studio with you and come in your workout clothing.
- Only 2 people will be allowed into the reception area at any given time. If you arrive, and there are two people already in the studio entry area, please wait in the hall, away from the door, until the area has cleared. We will do our best to help facilitate the movement of people smoothly and efficiently by letting you know when it is time to come in. You are welcome to walk barefoot, if need be, over to your workout space, and put your workout socks on over there (to help reduce the amount of time needed in the entry area).
- As previously requested, please refrain from arriving more than 5 minutes prior to your scheduled class time, and please do not spend time in the reception area chatting with your fellow participants. We hate to ask this, as we love the connection and community-feel that our clients bring, but in light of our current situation, it makes it a lot harder to reduce the congestion in this entry area. We will be so happy when we no longer need to ask this of you.
- To help with the above, we will provide bathroom keys, hand sanitizer and wipes out in the hall, directly beside our front entrance. Please use a key if you need to use the bathroom facilities down the hall, and please use hand sanitizer before and after handling keys. If we have not yet invited you into the studio for your session, please go to one of the designated waiting areas along our hallway wall, to wait until 5 minutes prior to your class time. Please know that we will be cleaning and organizing after the previous session and will let you in as soon as we can. We may soon be able to offer small stools to sit on and change into your workout socks there; stay tuned.
- As well, to help with reduced congestion, please be mindful of exiting in a timely manner, as quickly as possible. Again, we love our shared conversational moments but these will need to be put on hold until after the risk of Covid has been eliminated. If you choose to chat with your fellow participants before or after, out in the hall, please be mindful of our shared hallway and our neighbouring business also needing space for their clients to move about or wait safely. We trust that you understand the need for this at this time.
- We will now have a clipboard with the names of all incoming clients for the day, with an area to sign off prior to each session. When you come in, this will be sitting on the right side of our front desk. We ask you to sign it prior to proceeding to your workout area. It will be written out clearly, that by signing, you declare that you agree to the following statements:
- I do not have any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing, stuffy or runny nose, loss of sense of smell, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite.
- I have not been asked to self-quarantine due to exposure to Covid-19.
- I am not living with anyone who has tested positive for or has been asked to quarantine due to Covid 19.
- I have not travelled out of the country for the last 14 days, nor been on an airplane anywhere within this same period.
- I agree to wear my mask and to adhere to all social distancing requirements while in Meridian Pilates Studio.
- I have signed Meridian Pilates Studio’s waiver and risk of liability document, and agree to assume all risks related to Covid-19, or any other transmissible agent, during my participation in studio classes.

Due to the very real threat to our public health from Covid-19, I have decided to close the studio for the next two weeks. I will stay apprised of current developments and make decisions regarding any further need for closures, based on the situation and whether/how it develops.
It is an unprecedented time, and I have struggled greatly coming to this decision, but I believe that limiting the movement of people and maintaining pristine social distancing is my social responsibility, which I take very seriously.
However, I know that movement and contact between people is something that all of you value highly, so am working hard to provide a ‘Plan B’, one of offering a version of what we do through an online/remote meeting application. I am working details out right now, and hope to be able to offer any of you who wish it, an option to do a booked and scheduled movement session at home. These can be in small groups or one-on-one; I will send more details about it as I get it going.

We’re excited about our upcoming fall workshop Anatomy in 3D with Lauren Brandt. It’s a compelling, engaging and fun way to learn the basics of musculoskeletal anatomy, plus it satisfies the requirements for Anatomy in the Balanced Body Reformer and Comprehensive programs. Attendees build muscles in clay on a specially designed skeleton to imprint the body’s design deeply into their minds and develop a deep understanding of the structure and function of the human body and how the muscles and bones affect movement.
This workshop can also be taken by anyone wanting to gain more hands on knowledge of anatomy. It runs as a continuing education workshop for anyone interested in learning more about anatomy.

We are pleased to share that we are gearing up for another teacher training certification program here at Meridian Pilates Studio.
Our 2019/2020 Balanced Body Education program will commence in September 2019 and run through the end of May 2020.
We will kick off this years training offering an amazing Anatomy in 3 Dimensions workshop. This was a wonderful weekend in the past and is sure to fill up quickly again this year. Anatomy in 3D will satisfy the requirements for Anatomy in the Balanced Body Reformer and Comprehensive programs, as well as anyone looking for some anatomy knowledge. The course is also offered to all as a continuing education workshop and does not have to be taken in conjunction with the rest of the training.

For January 2nd – 5th we have drawn up a new, different, temporary holiday schedule. Again, your regularly scheduled group or private lessons will NOT be running as usual during these 4 days.
We will reopen on Jan. 7th, 2019 with our regular schedule.
Our group class schedule is online now, so feel free to look and contact us if you would like to schedule a session. We have four instructors available at different times, so we trust you will find something that works for you. If you would like a private lesson, please call or email us for availability.

An important reminder regarding closure dates and modified schedules from December 19th – January 2nd:
Closure Dates: The studio will be closed for all classes on Saturday, December 24th, Monday; December 26th; Tuesday, December 27th; and Monday, January 2nd. If you normally have classes on any of those days please enjoy your time off!
Modified Class Schedule: We’re running a modified schedule during the rest of those two weeks. Please come to your regular class unless we have called you to cancel your class or sesson or you have notified us of your cancellation or away dates. If you are unsure of whether your class has been cancelled, please refer to our online schedule, or contact us, ideally through email, to make certain.

New! We have changed the name of our class, formerly-known as Mixed Levels, to a new, more accurate name: Personal Program. This is to ensure that all clients understand that to book in to this type of class requires a program previously set-up through a series of Private lessons. In this format, you semi-independently follow your program with the support and assistance of an instructor, rather than being guided through the hour as you are in our other Led Classes (Tower, Mat and Reformer). Maximum 4 participants per class.
Old! Please note that all of our classes have an official length of 55 minutes per class. Some of us tend to run a little over this sometimes, but we are renewing our efforts to stick to this time frame to ensure smooth transitioning between all of our group and Private classes, as well as to provide a much needed short ‘breather’ for the instructors to transition to the next hour. This has always been the case, but sometimes we all ‘forget’ and wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of this – so that you don’t feel ‘shortchanged’ by a class that finishes or starts a couple of minutes off the expected hour. Thank you for your understanding!
Our apprentice teacher Susan Pierce is offering classes on Sunday and Thursday evenings starting this New Year. Susan has been teaching for a year now at Meridian – and the feedback has been excellent! – so we are pleased to offer new time slots for a 4 week series January 3 to January 27. Classes for both advanced students (more experience with Pilates) and beginning students (new, or fairly new, to Pilates) will both be available. If you are looking to add a new mat or reformer class to your schedule please talk to us at the desk to sign up!
To Our Valued Clients:
It’s that beautiful, busy, celebratory time of year again…! Many of us are starting to look forward to our yearly holiday celebrations and time off, and we would like your help in organizing the upcoming months’ schedules.
We will soon be coming up with our “Holiday Schedule”. During the various Christmas and New Years’ holidays (December 24th to January 2nd), we will not run our ‘usual’ schedule, but instead will offer a condensed version with Private sessions and Groups (on equipment and mat) at times that work for the instructors and clients who are around and would like to come in during this time.
We would greatly appreciate hearing from you, as soon as possible, about your plans for the holiday season, and whether you would be interested in any classes/sessions during that week. From that point forward, we can organize a schedule that works as well as it can for as many people as possible. We expect that we will open December 27, 28, 29 and perhaps the 31st – depending on interest.
There may also be some other changes to certain classes and sessions in the weeks leading up to and following the main holiday times, due to instructor’s holidays, but if your regular class will be affected by this, you will be contacted directly about it.

Many of you “may” have noticed (!!) the ‘no parking’ signs, construction in the alley-way and signs of demolition in the building across the street from our entrance on Bayswater. We know that this may be having an impact on your ability to park around here easily and quickly.
All of this disruption is, unfortunately, inevitable, but we would like you to know that the underground parking here, directly below the building, WILL be available for the duration of the disruption. The current city work should be completed as of tonight, but even during this time we are meant to have access to underground parking, except for some short moments when heavy equipment is directly in front of the access to the garage.
We also want to make sure that all of you KNOW that we have underground (pay) parking for this building! The access is from the alley behind us: if access from Bayswater is blocked, please go one block west to Balaclava, and enter beside the fire station (behind Kidsbooks). There should be at least one entry to the alley open at all times.
We do not know how long the demolition and subsequent construction will be happening, but it may be wise to try to leave yourselves a few minutes extra in arriving so that you don’t lose any of your valuable class/session time.
We will keep our fingers crossed that disruptions will be minimal and short-lived!
Apprentice Teacher Classes Available!
Starting June, 2012
We are pleased to announce that our Teacher Training program, through Balanced Body Education, is nearing its completion this year. One of our trainees, Susan Pierce, has been diligently practising her teaching on Mat and Reformer and is now ready to offer some apprentice-level classes out of the studio.
If you have been looking for another class to add to your schedule, or if any of your friends or family have been interested in giving Pilates a try, you can give us a call or an email. These classes will be offered at a lower rate than our regular classes, and will periodically be supervised to help Susan develop her skills.
The Fine Print
We ask that anyone joining these classes be relatively free from injury or serious physical conditions. Minor aches/pains and stiffness are fine; Pilates will help with exactly this! (If you are not sure whether you fit within this requirement, give us a call or email and we will help you assess.) We will also ask that anyone new to Pilates book in for one Private Intake/Evaluation session with Susan before the start of the series (see below for prices).
These classes will run as an 8-week series, beginning the week of June 4th. They will be offered at the following dates and times (all classes run 1 hour):

We hope that this will be an attractive option for some of you to get a new class in, or to help facilitate someone beginning on a new journey into Pilates!
Those of you in the studio regularly may have noticed two new additions to the studio equipment. On our east wall, we now have 2 Core Aligns installed. The Core Align is a relatively new tool in use for upright, functional strengthening. Developed by a Physio from Israel, Jonathan Hoffman, the equipment was developed specifically to improve the functioning of our upright, vertical standing posture by providing an unstable base and feedback through the hands and the feet. It demands that the whole body tap into its own innate intelligence to sort through alignment and strength challenges. It is amazingly accessible and useful work and most newcomers feel able to get a bit of a workout going – safely – within a very short time of using it. We have several teachers now who have done the basic training and can offer sessions using this. Private lessons or duets are the way to go with this (we only have 2!), and if you are interested, please contact us to set up a lesson time.
On Monday, October 10th, 2011, we will be open during the afternoon/evening for some select classes to help you balance the overindulgences of the weekends’ festivities! Join Nikki for the following classes (space limited, so booking is necessary), or ask for Private lesson availability:

Pregnancy and the early days, weeks and months of new motherhood are incredible times of change – so much so that it often feels like we have an entirely new body. While we know that we eventually settle into a ‘new normal’, it is useful and downright sanity-saving sometimes to have a little help transitioning into this new body by increasing your ability to access your core support, strengthen weak muscles and generally maintain your mobility.
Nikki Zekas has been teaching Pilates for over 8 years and specializes in working with women during and after pregnancy. Her love for this special time in a woman’s life is evident in her gentle, yet challenging sessions that help women maintain and develop deeper pathways of core strength and greater awareness of movement to help them stay injury-free.
I love Nikki! She helped me so much during and after my pregnancy. I felt strong and had an easy pregnancy. My back didn’t hurt as much as I hear other moms’ did. After the birth, during my first month’s check up, the doctor was impressed as I did not need perineal exercises (kegel). Four months later I went back to Pilates and found out that my core wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. Six months after giving birth I am training with a personal trainer who is impressed by my core strength. I continue Pilates with Nikki who is such a caring and giving instructor: she even manages to teach me while the baby is sleeping, babbling or eating in the stroller or on a mat copying mommy’s Pilates moves. At Meridian Pilates, we believe there are a myriad number of fabulous techniques that enable healthful changes through awareness of movement. Feldenkrais is a wonderful alternative practice and we encourage anyone interested in a new, safe and gentle movement experience to give it a try.
A Feldenkrais group class with Hilary Fuller (‘Awareness through Movement’), will start up this coming Thursday, April 28th from 12pm to 1pm. Hilary verbally guides you in the exploration of fun, gentle, progressive movements. Using safe and easy-to-follow directions, these classes reduces aches and pains while dramatically increasing ease of movement. The class will run every Thursday and we encourage you to drop on by for the experience!

Sound Healing Group Meditation
Sound stops the illusion and mindless chatter of our busy minds, putting us directly back into alignment with the universal flow of perfection that is our true nature. The Tibetan bowls are a vibrational tool used in ancient healing traditions by Buddhist monks. The sound vibration affects the alpha and theta brain waves, evoking a trance-like state and a deep feeling of relaxation where healing can take place. They are an effective vehicle to alter our consciousness from everyday stress to a peaceful and expansive meditative state.
