Our Approach to Step 3 of B.C.’s Restart Plan

To our valued clients,
During an unprecedented heat dome (better today, phew!) in an unprecedented pandemic, we hope that all of you are managing okay and are slowly finding ways to get back into a slightly expanded social world. It has been a long road, and we are so happy to finally see the light at the end of this tunnel growing a little closer and brighter!
We would like to share with you our approach to Step 3 of BC’s Restart Plan. Our goal is to continue to be a safe space for all who practice and teach here, while gradually reopening to greater numbers. This will be a slow and cautious process for us.
As of July 1st, the following change will occur at Meridian Pilates: we will introduce one more Reformer into our group area, so participants will be slightly closer together than they have been throughout the pandemic. Please note that we continue to follow the Covid-19 Safety Plan square footage allotments per person, even with people slightly closer together. During the summer, Apparatus classes with 4 participants will be a mix of Reformer, Chair, Mat and Arc; Tower work can be added if there are less than 4 in the class. We plan to have Tower capacity for 4 person classes in mid-late September.
Please note, we will no longer be able to run classes that have less than 2 participants registered. We hope this will not be a common occurrence, however when there is only one person booked into a class we will either cancel the class, or offer a private class for the cost of two sessions, if desired.
While we recognize that with this phase of re-opening the mandatory mask mandate has shifted to ‘masks recommended’, just as we required masks right from the beginning of the pandemic, we will continue to require masks in-studio for the next 3 weeks, at which point we will reassess. Our decision is bolstered by today’s World Health Organization’s recommendation that even double vaccinated persons should continue to wear masks in indoor spaces. Please know that we have the continued safety of all of our populations in mind when making this decision and have been following emerging guidelines, as closely as we can, to help make this decision. We had hoped to unmask a bit earlier, but needed to hold back a bit longer in order to ensure a safe space. We can get through this together, and avoid any 4th waves!
We would like to thank all of you for your patience and understanding while we move through the next stages of BC’s Restart Plan and a summer with a lot of movement of people in and out of Vancouver, including clients and teachers. As life is opening up more and more, we are all in need of various bits of downtime and holiday, and very much appreciate your flexibility when we need to make changes to schedules. We will always give as much notice as possible for such scheduling shifts.
In regards to travel, if you are travelling outside of Canada, we will ask you to continue to observe a 14-day waiting period before resuming classes at the studio. We appreciate your understanding of these various and cautious measures.
Many thanks,
Heather and the Meridian Team

July 1st Closure

The studio will be closed Thursday, July 1st for Canada Day. The studio will be open for regular hours on Friday July 2nd and Saturday, July 3rd.
Please notify the studio if you’re unable to attend your regular Friday or Saturday class.

Return to Small Group Classes

As per Tuesday’s announcement from Dr. Bonnie Henry and the Provincial Health Office, we will return to our low-intensity ‘fitness’ group sessions (3 participants in a group) this coming Monday, May 31st. Existing ONLINE classes will continue for the foreseeable future.
We have reached out to those of you who, are in our class schedule for the week of May 31st, to confirm your participation in classes. We have had a few small schedule changes with instructor availability, and are hard at work to accommodate as many participants as possible. Please be patient with us as we work through the existing availability.
The in-studio class schedule for the month of June will be back up on our website by end of day today. Online booking will also be available for those of you who prefer to book that way.
Please stay tuned to your email for any confirmations that we send out over the next short while. If you have not already responded to an email from us, we ask you to please confirm as we have people on waitlists.
We look forward to opening up to greater capacity as we move through the 4 Steps of reopening and will update our schedule accordingly.
Thank you again for your support through these recent shutdowns, and we look forward to all the stages of our staggered return to a new normal.

Studio Update: April 15th

As you know, during this current Public Health Order and increased transmission of Covid variants of concern, we are currently only running Private sessions in-studio. Though the current order is scheduled to run until April 19th, we have made the proactive decision to continue this current offering of only Private sessions, just as we have been doing these past couple of weeks, at least until the end of next week, April 24th. If the order is extended beyond the 19th, we will be ready and able to continue with our already scheduled Private lessons, and if the order is relaxed, we will act accordingly for the weeks beyond.
We trust that you understand the need for us to prepare for any eventuality. If this affects your booked sessions next week, we will be in touch to arrange any needed changes.

Studio Update: April 4th, 2021

Dear Meridian Pilates Clients,
After our initial relief to receive explicit communication from Vancouver Coastal Health last week about allowable 2-person groups, we are sorry to announce that this first message was sent to us in error, which has since been clearly communicated and corrected. We will no longer run any in-studio 2-person group classes, as previously described, until changes occur in this current Provincial Health Order. Private sessions are unaffected, and will continue as currently booked, however we will need to alter any regularly-booked semi-private sessions for clients who do not currently live in the same household. If you are in this category, please reach out to us, and we will discuss options.
Those of you currently enrolled in group classes have been sent an email describing our current options. Anyone else wishing to find out more about our online offerings or what might be possible in-person, within the scope of this current PHO, can reach out to us at info@meridianpilates.ca.
We wish all of you a safe journey through the end of this pandemic. We know that brighter days lie ahead of us, and we will keep the course, both to stay in business as best we can and to ensure the health and safety of all of our staff and clients. The fatigue and dismay we might be feeling about having to pivot again is nothing compared to the very horrific impact unbridled Covid could have on our community, and we are very aware of this fact in all of our current sorting of schedules.
As an aside, and a departure from what we normally communicate within email newsletters, there is a current petition circulating in regards to the standards being used to decide what is safe and what is not in the fitness industry. I am including a link here, for anyone who wishes to read and decide whether it makes sense for them to sign.
Sincerely,
Heather Low and Meridian Pilates Staff

Important Studio Update: March 29th, 2021

To Our Valued Pilates Community:
As you likely all know, today’s Covid-19 announcement brought a Provincial Order that, once again, shuts down group fitness activities in BC. After seeking and receiving explicit clarification from Vancouver Coastal Health, we are relieved to let you know that we will again be able to run our group classes as 2-person semi-private sessions. This is a small drop from our current class numbers of 3 (and sometimes 4 during quiet times), but it ensures that we can continue to operate and that our teachers keep working sustainably throughout the shutdown.
The Studio Action Plan during the Current Provincial Health Order:
We will rotate by cancelling 1 person out of each 3-person class, reaching out to one of you per class over the next 3 weeks (or as long as this Health Order is in place). You will receive an email if you are the person to be cancelled, with information about what day, so please do assume that you continue to be booked in your class if you have NOT been contacted to cancel. We are working on the most urgent days first, and will get to the next weeks once we have dealt with the most immediate of the changes needed.
For those of you who attend our ‘quiet studio’ 4-person classes, we are working on dividing these into 2 classes of 2, like we did last November/December. If we have found coverage (i.e.: another teacher to run a second 2-person class), you will NOT be contacted to cancel or to apprise you of the change. We trust that you understand the need to stay flexible at this time, and your regular teacher will help manage the switch to a different teacher as needed.
If you have strong preferences about not coming in during this time of heightened transmission of the virus and the spread of the variants, please let us know as soon as possible. Please know that we also have availability in some of our existing online classes and we would welcome seeing you online if that works well for you!
We hope to be able to keep movement/workouts happening for as many of you as possible, albeit a little more spread out. We are very confident in our protocols, and will continue to hold fast to these to ensure that our studio remains a safe space for you to practice Pilates.
Thank you, and please note that we will do our best to respond to questions/emails as quickly as we can, and we appreciate your patience with us as we adjust to this new situation.
Warm regards, and wishing all of you continued good health!
Heather

Family Day Hours and Closure

The studio will be closed Monday, February 15th for Family Day. The studio will be open on Saturday, February 13th.

2020 Holiday Schedule

To our valued and incredibly persistent and patient clients!
Please carefully read through the following details about the upcoming holiday, and reach out, in the manner indicated below, should you wish to join us in-studio or online over the upcoming holiday.
Our ‘regular schedule’ will not run as usual during the weeks from Monday, Dec 21st to Sunday, Jan 3rd. During that time, the following instructors will be OFF completely: Heather, Cindy & Natalia. Clients with regular private and semi-private sessions with these instructors have been, or will soon be, emailed to apprise them that their sessions are cancelled for this period, and that sessions will resume as of January 4th. Marcy will also take these two weeks off; we are very grateful for all that she has been doing to manage the schedule, and are delighted to announce that Susan Gunn will take over for Marcy during this time, and will help you with your scheduling needs.
When communicating specifically about holiday schedule classes, please use email only, and use the following subject line in your emails: 2020 Holiday Schedule. We thank you for your attention to this small detail, as it will help us immensely in keeping our tasks streamlined!
On the following dates: Dec. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, Linda, Hadas, Becki (Rebekah), Krista and Ali will each teach a few days, with a somewhat altered schedule from our usual. If you normally do private or semi-private lessons with these teachers, you may have, or soon will, receive an email from Susan regarding a possible schedule for you during these two weeks.
The holiday availability will be a mix of private sessions, semi-private sessions, as well as our current “2-person” groups (while we await new guidelines from BC Public Health; we hope to return to 3-person groups once we know more).
If you currently have a (somewhat) regular group time booked, please consider this usual session to be cancelled between December 21st and January 3rd. As noted above, we will have some group times available. Depending on demand, we may have to limit you to one or two classes during this period, as it is very likely that we will remain limited to 2-person sessions.
If you would like to book a group class between Dec. 21st and Dec 30th, please use email only, and, again, use the specific subject line: 2020 Holiday Schedule.
We wish all of you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and/or whatever festival or celebration you may have in your traditions to bring light into this dark time of year. May the quietness we will all experience this year bring us peace in knowing we are protecting our loved ones and our healthcare system (and workers!) from overload! And, please know that we are all so very grateful to have had your continued support and enthusiasm as we have been adjusting and organizing to stay safe within these unusual and difficult circumstances. We appreciate all of you very very much.
Warm Holiday Wishes from Heather and the whole Meridian team.

Small Group Classes Are Running

To our valued clients, once again!
We are very pleased to be able to continue to run our small group classes, as we had been doing, prior to this past week. Our protocols for entry and exit have been strengthened, which we deemed to be our weakest link. We are very confident in our cautious approach to distancing within the whole studio, thorough cleaning protocols and mask requirement. Thank you for supporting our efforts to let people in and out in measured steps, ensuring only 2 in the entry at all times. We urge you to do your best to arrive about 5 minutes or less prior to your session. PLEASE make sure you arrive before we lock the door during the teaching hour. Your efforts are noticed. We greatly appreciate your support in helping to keep our studio as safe as possible at this time.
Our schedule is back to “normal” after having to reduce it last week. If you are uncertain about whether you are booked for a session, please email us to find out. Or, if you are signed up for online booking, you can view your schedule when you are signed into your account.
We look forward to seeing you next week, masks on and moving forward, one step at a time, together!
Sincerely,
Heather Low

Action Request of Current Clients

To our valued clients:
In our quest to understand and comply with the most recent BC Health Order, we have been in communication with colleagues around the lower mainland, in an effort to get some clarity on how the language is evolving to ensure the safety of all in the Vancouver and Fraser Coastal Health regions.
We have now been given clarity that 1 and 2 person ‘fitness’ sessions (including Pilates) are allowable at this time, but nothing beyond that until our Covid Safety Plan has been approved by Vancouver Coastal Health. Our plan HAS been submitted for review, and we must now wait until they are able to get through the many, many plans that have likely been submitted this week; until then though, we must reduce our numbers down to only 2 people maximum per session with each teacher. This would be a devastating hit in normal times, but, thankfully, we are still eligible for government support, for which we are very grateful.
We are confident that our plan WILL be approved, but until then, must take steps to ensure we are compliant with the order. Due to this, we will need to reduce our current 3 (and, every so often, 4) person classes. We expect this to be temporary, and are going to do our best to whittle these numbers in the fairest way that we can.
What this means to you:
ACTION REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS WHENEVER POSSIBLE:
If any of you have multiple (2 or more) classes/sessions per week, and would be willing to be part of the effort in a proactive way, please reach out to us to let us know that you are ok with us removing you from a session; we might ask you to allow us to choose the session, as there are some times that are more jammed up than others. Please email us asap to volunteer.
After we have heard from volunteers, some of you will then receive an email from us, in the next 48 hours, advising you that we have had to remove you from a class that you have been booked into. We will use varied factors to make these decisions and hope that you will trust us to do what we need to do, in the best way that we can. It will not be an easy task for us and we humbly ask for your patience and cooperation in this process.
As we may try to spread out and offer a few more 2-person classes at quieter times in the studio, please also reach out if you are currently taking private lessons and would be willing to move to a semi-private with another currently private session participant. The difference between a 2-person group and a semi-private will be in the personalization of the session. You can expect to have hands-on guidance in all private lessons and semi-private lessons (with participant permission, of course), as well as having individualized attention in the semi-private sessions, but in the 2-person groups, we will not be offering hands-on guidance, as per our updated Safety Plan, and the classes will run as led classes throughout. (Some semi-privates also run this way; we adjust this based on the needs of the participants involved, but these can also include hands-on guidance.)
ANOTHER OPTION: We also still have online mat classes, which all of us are getting better and better at running, and would welcome anyone to join these as we live within the current restrictions.
We will retain the schedule as-is, to go back to, for when we receive our approval, and/or when the Health Order is lifted. We have high faith that our protocols will stand up to examination and that we will get the needed approval. And, we support the efforts of our Health Ministry to keep our communities safe, understanding that they need to ensure that compliance is happening across the board. I remind myself constantly that our efforts thus far have not been in vain, and that we need to continue to listen to our Health Officers and do what is best for all.
Please stay tuned in to emails coming through shortly.
With respect and determination to keep all of us safe and well.

Current Covid Update

As we review and adjust to the current changes of the new health order, we have made some changes to the operation of the studio and classes effective immediately. Please take the time to read below as we are all doing what we can to continue to offer you a safe and comfortable environment to move in.
  • Late arrivals will not be admitted into the class/studio. We are sorry that you will have missed your time but we need to enforce this to ensure proper Covid-19 protocols are followed. If you are finding that your class time is too tight for you to arrive on time, please check our schedule for a class that may work better for you.
  • For the duration of this order we will refrain from hands on cueing until it is deemed safe to do so.
  • Upon arrival, the studio will be locked. A few minutes prior to the start of your class, the door will be propped open by an instructor. Once the instructor has moved behind the desk, the person at the front of the line may move into the dedicated waiting spot that has been marked in tape on the floor (this spot is to be used ONLY at that time the door has been opened, otherwise it will block the bathroom key/sanitation area). The instructor will let you know when to come in, as to make sure we are not over-capacity inside the entry area. You will be asked to sign a COVID-19 attestation, sanitize your hands and proceed promptly to your designated work out area. The instructor will then lock the door after all clients are into the studio. Upon exiting you will also be guided to gather your personal items and exit through the propped open door to minimize the amount of people in the front entrance area.
  • In addition to spraying down the equipment after your session, we have added an additional step for clients to “wet wipe” the spray down to spread the detergent uniformly over the area (not to dry).
  • A reminder as the weather gets cooler to bring minimal amounts of personal items into the studio with you and come in your workout clothing.
Thank you again for all your support and joining us in movement as we all navigate this ever evolving time.

New Health Order Studio and Class Updates

To our valued clients:
All of you are likely aware of BC’s new Health Order, which came into effect Nov. 7th at 10pm, in order to reduce the recent increasing Covid-19 transmission in the Fraser and Coastal Health regions. I have spent the last 24 hours reviewing the language and intent of the order, to understand better what it means for the operations of Meridian Pilates Studio. Our primary concern, throughout the pandemic, has been one of making sure that we not only meet, but exceed, protocols for reduced risk of transmission of the virus.
After my research, I  have come to the conclusion that we can continue to offer our sessions, in the way we have been, since our Covid protocol period began. Our goal is to continue to offer a safe space for all clients. We believe that we currently provide a low-risk environment and fall into an allowable category of ‘individualized sessions’. I am sharing a newsclip where Dr. Henry answered a question about gyms, one that gives me certainty that our sessions fall into allowable fitness activity. If you are interested, please go to the following clip, skip ahead to just about 56 minutes in, and listen to Dr. Henry’s response to reporter Richard Zussman.
Please be aware that, should you not feel comfortable coming in during this time, that we support any decision that you need to make for yourself, but will need you to let us know to cancel you. Again, 24-hours cancellation applies, except for conditions developing last-minute, related to Covid-19. We appreciate your continued support as we navigate the difficulties of the time.
In light of yesterday’s order, we have reviewed all of our protocols, and have decided that we need to tighten up two areas for improved safety, during this time of heightened risk of community transfer, and likely ongoing. These include regular health screenings/attestations for both clients and staff, as well as reduced congestion in the reception area at the front during our class change overs.
PLEASE READ THROUGH THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO UNDERSTAND AND COMPLY WITH OUR NEWEST COVID REQUIREMENTS.
1. Reducing Congestion:
  • Only 2 people will be allowed into the reception area at any given time. If you arrive, and there are two people already in the studio entry area, please wait in the hall, away from the door, until the area has cleared. We will do our best to help facilitate the movement of people smoothly and efficiently by letting you know when it is time to come in. You are welcome to walk barefoot, if need be, over to your workout space, and put your workout socks on over there (to help reduce the amount of time needed in the entry area).
  • As previously requested, please refrain from arriving more than 5 minutes prior to your scheduled class time, and please do not spend time in the reception area chatting with your fellow participants. We hate to ask this, as we love the connection and community-feel that our clients bring, but in light of our current situation, it makes it a lot harder to reduce the congestion in this entry area. We will be so happy when we no longer need to ask this of you.
  • To help with the above, we will provide bathroom keys, hand sanitizer and wipes out in the hall, directly beside our front entrance. Please use a key if you need to use the bathroom facilities down the hall, and please use hand sanitizer before and after handling keys. If we have not yet invited you into the studio for your session, please go to one of the designated waiting areas along our hallway wall, to wait until 5 minutes prior to your class time. Please know that we will be cleaning and organizing after the previous session and will let you in as soon as we can. We may soon be able to offer small stools to sit on and change into your workout socks there; stay tuned.
  • As well, to help with reduced congestion, please be mindful of exiting in a timely manner, as quickly as possible. Again, we love our shared conversational moments but these will need to be put on hold until after the risk of Covid has been eliminated. If you choose to chat with your fellow participants before or after, out in the hall, please be mindful of our shared hallway and our neighbouring business also needing space for their clients to move about or wait safely. We trust that you understand the need for this at this time.
2. Covid Screening/Attestation:
  • We will now have a clipboard with the names of all incoming clients for the day, with an area to sign off prior to each session. When you come in, this will be sitting on the right side of our front desk. We ask you to sign it prior to proceeding to your workout area. It will be written out clearly, that by signing, you declare that you agree to the following statements:
  1. I do not have any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing, stuffy or runny nose, loss of sense of smell, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite.
  2. I have not been asked to self-quarantine due to exposure to Covid-19.
  3. I am not living with anyone who has tested positive for or has been asked to quarantine due to Covid 19.
  4. I have not travelled out of the country for the last 14 days, nor been on an airplane anywhere within this same period.
  5. I agree to wear my mask and to adhere to all social distancing requirements while in Meridian Pilates Studio.
  6. I have signed Meridian Pilates Studio’s waiver and risk of liability document, and agree to assume all risks related to Covid-19, or any other transmissible agent, during my participation in studio classes.
Please note that all staff will be completing a Covid-screening prior to each day they come to teach as well. They will also not be spending their in between times in the front reception area, again, to reduce congestion overall.
Thank you for your attention to this lengthy email. We appreciate your continued support, and will look forward to seeing those of you who continue to join us in-studio or online.

Schedule Update: More Classes Available Soon!

We are currently building our online schedule and will have it up very soon.  We will have updated offerings for classes starting next week.  Please keep checking our schedule and we will also send out more details as soon as these are available for sign up. We thank you for your patience while we navigate this platform.

What Clients are Saying About Online Classes!

We are grateful for our client feedback on our new Meridian Online Classes (MOC). As we navigate this format, we have found your positive words encouraging. Here are a few words from some of our great clients. Have you taken one of our new online classes? We would LOVE to hear from you too!

“When I finished yesterday’s class I left feeling I was actually in the studio working out with the many friendly faces I have seen over the years.  I did not realize until the class was finished how I missed the feeling of being close with other humans.    I know all the media tells us we may be lonely, however I am no longer lonely when I log onto a class with the Meridian family. Thank you again for all the work it takes to organize this program.   The work out was also well instructed and very easy to follow.” Sylvia

“It’s great to get an online class. Otherwise I would totally seize up waiting for Meridian’s reopening. Ali was extremely good and attentive today, as usual, and noticed all the small changes in position I needed for improving my workout in the mat class. Thanks so much for providing this service.” Peter

“I was wondering how it would work taking pilates online, however, it actually worked very well. I positioned my laptop so Krista could see me lying down on my mat in my living room and she was able to offer helpful suggestions on how to correct mistakes and could speak with me as if we were in the same room. I’d still rather be there at Meridian in-person, but online is surprisingly effective during this time of physical distancing. I look forward to my next session!” David

“Meridian means health, happiness, and community connection.  With COVID-19 I miss my classes terribly, and have been thrilled to start the new online classes.  The zoom application is new to me but has proven very easy to use.  With my first class I immediately felt physically so much better. And reconnected too!  It is wonderful to be back in the Meridian community and my healthy routine.  Thank you for the fast innovation to keep us connected!!” Laura

Online Privates and Classes from Your Home!

I’m sure many of you are missing your movement time at Meridian, and perhaps there is a win-win to come out of this, in some way. We have set up a remote teaching application using Zoom (an online meeting application we can use to practice social distancing while still connecting with you).
We would love to hang out with you. Any of you who might want to try a mat-based workout in their own homes, led by an instructor who already knows your body and particular habits and challenges, are most welcome to join us here. You don’t need much, but we will send you an email with more details on using any props you may own as well as setting up zoom, if interested.
We believe that working out remotely can be an excellent option, given our world right now, to help keep those body aches and pains from building up for too long.  Please reach out to us to find out a schedule and how this could work for you. Teachers who are able to offer this at this point are as follows:
Natalia, Danielle, Krista, Ali, Linda, Heather, Marlis, Lisa and Hadas
Other teachers may join in later if this proves popular and successful.
We hope to ‘see’ some of you soon through this method. And, if not, please know that we will be doing our best to hang in there, and be ready to meet you at the end of this road.

Covid-19 Studio Closure March 17 to 31

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are closing our doors for two weeks. We will update as needed in case of further closures, as the situation evolves.
For current Meridian clients, please inquire about possible remote classes and sessions, as we are in the process of setting this up. Good health to all.

Studio Closure – Effective Tuesday March 17th

To our valued clients,

Due to the very real threat to our public health from Covid-19, I have decided to close the studio for the next two weeks. I will stay apprised of current developments and make decisions regarding any further need for closures, based on the situation and whether/how it develops.

It is an unprecedented time, and I have struggled greatly coming to this decision, but I believe that limiting the movement of people and maintaining pristine social distancing is my social responsibility, which I take very seriously.

However, I know that movement and contact between people is something that all of you value highly, so am working hard to provide a ‘Plan B’, one of offering a version of what we do through an online/remote meeting application. I am working details out right now, and hope to be able to offer any of you who wish it, an option to do a booked and scheduled movement session at home. These can be in small groups or one-on-one; I will send more details about it as I get it going.

From all of us at Meridian, we wish all of you continued good health and we look forward to seeing you all once this threat has passed.

Sincerely,
Heather

Anatomy in 3D is for Everyone!

ANATOMY IN 3 DIMENSIONS

We’re excited about our upcoming fall workshop Anatomy in 3D with Lauren Brandt. It’s a compelling, engaging and fun way to learn the basics of musculoskeletal anatomy, plus it satisfies the requirements for Anatomy in the Balanced Body Reformer and Comprehensive programs. Attendees build muscles in clay on a specially designed skeleton to imprint the body’s design deeply into their minds and develop a deep understanding of the structure and function of the human body and how the muscles and bones affect movement.

This workshop can also be taken by anyone wanting to gain more hands on knowledge of anatomy. It runs as a continuing education workshop for anyone interested in learning more about anatomy.

Check our website for more details and to register.

To learn more, ask questions, or to chat about this opportunity, please contact our education department.

Some New and Old Studio Information

New!   We have changed the name of our class, formerly-known as Mixed Levels, to a new, more accurate name: Personal Program. This is to ensure that all clients understand that to book in to this type of class requires a program previously set-up through a series of Private lessons. In this format, you semi-independently follow your program with the support and assistance of an instructor, rather than being guided through the hour as you are in our other Led Classes (Tower, Mat and Reformer). Maximum 4 participants per class.

Old!   Please note that all of our classes have an official length of 55 minutes per class. Some of us tend to run a little over this sometimes, but we are renewing our efforts to stick to this time frame to ensure smooth transitioning between all of our group and Private classes, as well as to provide a much needed short ‘breather’ for the instructors to transition to the next hour. This has always been the case, but sometimes we all ‘forget’ and wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of this – so that you don’t feel ‘shortchanged’ by a class that finishes or starts a couple of minutes off the expected hour. Thank you for your understanding!

New Classes for the New Year

Our apprentice teacher Susan Pierce is offering classes on Sunday and Thursday evenings starting this New Year. Susan has been teaching for a year now at Meridian – and the feedback has been excellent! – so we are pleased to offer new time slots for a 4 week series January 3 to January 27. Classes for both advanced students (more experience with Pilates) and beginning students (new, or fairly new, to Pilates) will both be available. If you are looking to add a new mat or reformer class to your schedule please talk to us at the desk to sign up!

Holiday Schedule Request!

To Our Valued Clients:

It’s that beautiful, busy, celebratory time of year again…! Many of us are starting to look forward to our yearly holiday celebrations and time off, and we would like your help in organizing the upcoming months’ schedules.

We will soon be coming up with our “Holiday Schedule”. During the various Christmas and New Years’ holidays (December 24th to January 2nd), we will not run our ‘usual’ schedule, but instead will offer a condensed version with Private sessions and Groups (on equipment and mat) at times that work for the instructors and clients who are around and would like to come in during this time.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from you, as soon as possible, about your plans for the holiday season, and whether you would be interested in any classes/sessions during that week. From that point forward, we can organize a schedule that works as well as it can for as many people as possible. We expect that we will open December 27, 28, 29 and perhaps the 31st – depending on interest.

There may also be some other changes to certain classes and sessions in the weeks leading up to and following the main holiday times, due to instructor’s holidays, but if your regular class will be affected by this, you will be contacted directly about it.

And please do contact us by email or by phone as soon as you know of your plans. Many thanks!

Traffic snarls, disruption and parking, oh my!

Many of you “may” have noticed (!!) the ‘no parking’ signs, construction in the alley-way and signs of demolition in the building across the street from our entrance on Bayswater. We know that this may be having an impact on your ability to park around here easily and quickly.

All of this disruption is, unfortunately, inevitable, but we would like you to know that the underground parking here, directly below the building, WILL be available for the duration of the disruption. The current city work should be completed as of tonight, but even during this time we are meant to have access to underground parking, except for some short moments when heavy equipment is directly in front of the access to the garage.

We also want to make sure that all of you KNOW that we have underground (pay) parking for this building! The access is from the alley behind us: if access from Bayswater is blocked, please go one block west to Balaclava, and enter beside the fire station (behind Kidsbooks). There should be at least one entry to the alley open at all times.

We do not know how long the demolition and subsequent construction will be happening, but it may be wise to try to leave yourselves a few minutes extra in arriving so that you don’t lose any of your valuable class/session time.

We will keep our fingers crossed that disruptions will be minimal and short-lived!

New! Apprentice Classes Available!

Apprentice Teacher Classes Available!
Starting June, 2012

We are pleased to announce that our Teacher Training program, through Balanced Body Education, is nearing its completion this year. One of our trainees, Susan Pierce, has been diligently practising her teaching on Mat and Reformer and is now ready to offer some apprentice-level classes out of the studio.

If you have been looking for another class to add to your schedule, or if any of your friends or family have been interested in giving Pilates a try, you can give us a call or an email. These classes will be offered at a lower rate than our regular classes, and will periodically be supervised to help Susan develop her skills.

The Fine Print

We ask that anyone joining these classes be relatively free from injury or serious physical conditions. Minor aches/pains and stiffness are fine; Pilates will help with exactly this! (If you are not sure whether you fit within this requirement, give us a call or email and we will help you assess.) We will also ask that anyone new to Pilates book in for one Private Intake/Evaluation session with Susan before the start of the series (see below for prices).

These classes will run as an 8-week series, beginning the week of June 4th. They will be offered at the following dates and times (all classes run 1 hour):

Thursdays:

Mat Level 1/2: 5pm

Mat Level 1 (beginner): 6pm

Fridays:

Reformer Level 1 (beginner): 4pm

Reformer Level 1/2: 5pm

Sundays:

Reformer Level 1/2: 8:50am

Reformer Level 1 (beginner): 10am

Costs

Mat and Reformer group classes (4 people max. per class): $14 + HST

Private Intake/Evaluation: $20 + HST

We hope that this will be an attractive option for some of you to get a new class in, or to help facilitate someone beginning on a new journey into Pilates!

New! Core Align is ready and rolling!

Those of you in the studio regularly may have noticed two new additions to the studio equipment. On our east wall, we now have 2 Core Aligns installed. The Core Align is a relatively new tool in use for upright, functional strengthening. Developed by a Physio from Israel, Jonathan Hoffman, the equipment was developed specifically to improve the functioning of our upright, vertical standing posture by providing an unstable base and feedback through the hands and the feet. It demands that the whole body tap into its own innate intelligence to sort through alignment and strength challenges. It is amazingly accessible and useful work and most newcomers feel able to get a bit of a workout going – safely – within a very short time of using it. We have several teachers now who have done the basic training and can offer sessions using this. Private lessons or duets are the way to go with this (we only have 2!), and if you are interested, please contact us to set up a lesson time.

Pre- and Post-Natal Sessions with Nikki

Pregnancy and the early days, weeks and months of new motherhood are incredible times of change – so much so that it often feels like we have an entirely new body. While we know that we eventually settle into a ‘new normal’, it is useful and downright sanity-saving sometimes to have a little help transitioning into this new body by increasing your ability to access your core support, strengthen weak muscles and generally maintain your mobility.

Nikki Zekas has been teaching Pilates for over 8 years and specializes in working with women during and after pregnancy. Her love for this special time in a woman’s life is evident in her gentle, yet challenging sessions that help women maintain and develop deeper pathways of core strength and greater awareness of movement to help them stay injury-free.

I love Nikki! She helped me so much during and after my pregnancy. I felt strong and had an easy pregnancy. My back didn’t hurt as much as I hear other moms’ did. After the birth, during my first month’s check up, the doctor was impressed as I did not need perineal exercises (kegel). Four months later I went back to Pilates and found out that my core wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. Six months after giving birth I am training with a personal trainer who is impressed by my core strength. I continue Pilates with Nikki who is such a caring and giving instructor: she even manages to teach me while the baby is sleeping, babbling or eating in the stroller or on a mat copying mommy’s Pilates moves. Vanessa Avila

Doing Pilates while I was pregnant helped me stay strong for the birth, helped me avoid injury, and helped relieve back and hip discomfort associated with my pregnancy. After giving birth Pilates helped me to realign my body and find my abs again! I was hiking in the woods with my baby starting one week after she was born. I never would have had the core strength to do that without Pilates.  Abby Remick

During my pregnancy, I was anxious to keep my body strong, to minimize common physical complaints such as backaches, sore feet, and joint pain through regular attendance to Pilates classes. I believe that Nikki’s gentle guidance is the reason why I had such a pleasant experience for the duration of my pregnancy. I have never felt as physically strong as I did while under Nikki’s care. Nikki’s passion for supporting expectant mothers is demonstrated by her enthusiasm for the topic of child development as well as her inexhaustible supply of prenatal exercises tailored to meet the special needs of her clients. I might also add that after I gave birth to my daughter, my body returned to its pre-pregnancy form much faster than I expected; I believe this is a result of the Pilates training that I received from Nikki. I would highly recommend pre-natal Pilates at Meridian under the capable guidance of Nikki. Natasha McCartney

Private sessions are available, and progression into small, individualized groups can be achieved after a suitable number of sessions have been taken (this number varies depending on individual situations; call us for more information) Private lessons begin at $77 per lesson and small group (max 4 participants) sessions range between $30 and $40 per lesson.

Call or email us for more information: info@meridianpilates.ca or 604-730-4094

Introductory Feldenkrais Workshop

We are pleased to offer an opportunity to learn about the Feldenkrais Method this coming January:

What it is:
The Feldenkrais Method is designed to help you move with greater comfort, ease and skill. Endorsed by our Canadian Men’s Alpine Ski Team and practiced world-wide, the Feldenkrais Method is perfect for improving athletic performance, easing discomforts and for rehabilitating injuries.
The Feldenkrais Method is expressed in two complementary forms:
Awareness Through Movement (ATM), ideal for those wanting to find more ease and grace in their lives. These group classes are very effective in helping one to overcome old injuries/limitations, as well as improving one’s walking, skiing, gardening, golfing, paddling…or any other activity which you enjoy. Participants will leave class with better posture and a renewed sense of vitality.
Functional Integration(FI) sessions are specialized, one-on-one lessons that are catered to your unique needs. This intuitive, hands-on approach promotes rapid recovery without manipulatory forces.
Feldenkrais practitioner, Hilary Fuller, came to Feldenkrais after studying a variety of movement/healing arts. He is certified by the North American Feldenkrais Guild (2007) and has been teaching full-time since his certification.
This introductory workshop is simply that: an opportunity to learn a little more about the method and how or why it may be beneficial for you.
Saturday, January 15th
2:30pm – 4:30pm
Cost: $15
(proceeds to be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society)
Please call the studio to pre-register.

The Tibetan bowls are a vibrational tool used in ancient healing traditions by Buddhist monks. The sound vibration affects the alpha and theta brain waves, evoking a trance-like state and a deep feeling of relaxation where healing can take place. They are an effective vehicle to alter our consciousness from everyday stress to a peaceful and expansive meditative state. One can experience shifts in perception of space, sense of peace, tranquility and balance, chakra balancing, energy synchronization, accentuated clarity of mind and body as well as enhanced creativity.

Developmental Movement Series is CANCELLED. Please let us know if you are interested and we will work on running this is the New Year!
