In Studio Privates and Duets

While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same at Meridian Pilates; our commitment to your wellness and safety.
We would like to take this opportunity to update you regarding the re-opening of the physical studio. We will be reopening in phases, which will evolve as needed to ensure the safety of our community and following any additional government directives regarding COVID-19 and British Columbia’s Restart Plan.
Starting next week, Wednesday May 27th, we will be offering in studio appointments. Heather and Krista will be available for PRIVATES and DUETS. We anticipate our first phase of reopening to run for at least the next 2 weeks while we navigate new protocols and guidelines. This is a learning curve for all of us and we appreciate your patience and support through this time.

Heather: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 8am-2pm
Krista: Wednesday and Thursday; 11am-5pm

As you can imagine, a few things are changing around the studio with the plan of gradual reopening. We have thoroughly reviewed the new standards and protocols necessary and are implementing new procedures at the studio which will ensure a safe environment for both staff and clients. Please stay tuned for more details of our reopening plan as well as our new guidelines and protocols around in-studio practice.
During this time we will still offer our online classes and privates and continue to do so as we reopen the studio. We want all of you to feel you are in a safe and comfortable environment and we understand that for many of you, that means continuing to join us online from your home.

As our current community has changed we have been building a space (online) that we hope will welcome you to see familiar faces and move your body. We appreciate all of you, our Meridian clients, and we are here to continue to bring you Pilates and a sense of togetherness.

Online Privates and Classes from Your Home!

I’m sure many of you are missing your movement time at Meridian, and perhaps there is a win-win to come out of this, in some way. We have set up a remote teaching application using Zoom (an online meeting application we can use to practice social distancing while still connecting with you).
We would love to hang out with you. Any of you who might want to try a mat-based workout in their own homes, led by an instructor who already knows your body and particular habits and challenges, are most welcome to join us here. You don’t need much, but we will send you an email with more details on using any props you may own as well as setting up zoom, if interested.
We believe that working out remotely can be an excellent option, given our world right now, to help keep those body aches and pains from building up for too long.  Please reach out to us to find out a schedule and how this could work for you. Teachers who are able to offer this at this point are as follows:

Other teachers may join in later if this proves popular and successful.

Covid-19 Studio Closure March 17 to 31

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are closing our doors for two weeks. We will update as needed in case of further closures, as the situation evolves.
For current Meridian clients, please inquire about possible remote classes and sessions, as we are in the process of setting this up. Good health to all.

Studio Closure – Effective Tuesday March 17th

To our valued clients,

Due to the very real threat to our public health from Covid-19, I have decided to close the studio for the next two weeks. I will stay apprised of current developments and make decisions regarding any further need for closures, based on the situation and whether/how it develops.

It is an unprecedented time, and I have struggled greatly coming to this decision, but I believe that limiting the movement of people and maintaining pristine social distancing is my social responsibility, which I take very seriously.

However, I know that movement and contact between people is something that all of you value highly, so am working hard to provide a ‘Plan B’, one of offering a version of what we do through an online/remote meeting application. I am working details out right now, and hope to be able to offer any of you who wish it, an option to do a booked and scheduled movement session at home. These can be in small groups or one-on-one; I will send more details about it as I get it going.

From all of us at Meridian, we wish all of you continued good health and we look forward to seeing you all once this threat has passed.

Anatomy in 3D is for Everyone!


We’re excited about our upcoming fall workshop Anatomy in 3D with Lauren Brandt. It’s a compelling, engaging and fun way to learn the basics of musculoskeletal anatomy, plus it satisfies the requirements for Anatomy in the Balanced Body Reformer and Comprehensive programs. Attendees build muscles in clay on a specially designed skeleton to imprint the body’s design deeply into their minds and develop a deep understanding of the structure and function of the human body and how the muscles and bones affect movement. 

This workshop can also be taken by anyone wanting to gain more hands on knowledge of anatomy. It runs as a continuing education workshop for anyone interested in learning more about anatomy.

Teacher Training 2019/2020

We are pleased to share that we are gearing up for another teacher training certification program here at Meridian Pilates Studio.

Our 2019/2020 Balanced Body Education program will commence in September 2019 and run through the end of May 2020.

We will kick off this years training offering an amazing Anatomy in 3 Dimensions workshop. This was a wonderful weekend in the past and is sure to fill up quickly again this year.  Anatomy in 3D will satisfy the requirements for Anatomy in the Balanced Body Reformer and Comprehensive programs, as well as anyone looking for some anatomy knowledge. The course is also offered to all as a continuing education workshop and does not have to be taken in conjunction with the rest of the training.

Thank you all for your feedback about your holiday plans. Those of you who have been in touch will be contacted.
Our Holiday Closures are different this year from what we have done in the past; please mark your calendars with the following:


The studio will be closed for the entire period of:
Dec. 23rd to Jan. 1st.

If you have a regular group class, or private lesson time at the studio, this session will NOT be running as usual. Please note this in your calendars.

We will be doing (stage one of) a little studio refresh during this time and look forward to sharing it with you in the New Year.

For January 2nd – 5th we have drawn up a new, different, temporary holiday schedule. Again, your regularly scheduled group or private lessons will NOT be running as usual during these 4 days.

We will reopen on Jan. 7th, 2019 with our regular schedule.

Our group class schedule is online now, so feel free to look and contact us if you would like to schedule a session. We have four instructors available at different times, so we trust you will find something that works for you. If you would like a private lesson, please call or email us for availability.

Again, for those of you who have contacted us already, we will be in touch to confirm your session.

A reminder below of our studio closure dates and modified schedule from now through January 7th:
Closure Dates: The studio will be CLOSED for all classes on Saturday, December 23rd, Monday; December 25th; Tuesday, December 26th; and Monday, January 1st. If you normally have classes on any of those days please enjoy your time off!
Modified Class Schedule: We are OPEN and are running a modified schedule between Dec 27th and January 6th. Please come to your regular class on our open dates, unless we have emailed you to cancel your class or session or you have notified us of your cancellation or away dates.
If you are unsure of your booked schedule and cancellations, please contact us to confirm or check with the front desk. If we have not heard from you regarding cancellations during this week, we will assume you are coming; to avoid late cancellation charges, please make sure you contact us to let us know of your away dates.

Fall 2017 Teacher Training

Our next round of Teacher Training is starting in September and registration is now open. Our Pilates teacher training program is run under the umbrella of Balanced Body, Inc. Education, an internationally-recognized and highly regarded Pilates equipment and education company based in Sacramento, CA. Our program is module-based and allows you to take each or all of the modules in the way that suits you best: all in one year, or spread out over 1, 2 or more years if it works better for your lifestyle or learning-style. Holiday Closures & Modified Class Schedule December 19th – January 2nd

An important reminder regarding closure dates and modified schedules from December 19th – January 2nd:

Closure Dates: The studio will be closed for all classes on Saturday, December 24th, Monday; December 26th; Tuesday, December 27th; and Monday, January 2nd. If you normally have classes on any of those days please enjoy your time off!

Some New and Old Studio Information

New!   We have changed the name of our class, formerly-known as Mixed Levels, to a new, more accurate name: Personal Program. This is to ensure that all clients understand that to book in to this type of class requires a program previously set-up through a series of Private lessons. In this format, you semi-independently follow your program with the support and assistance of an instructor, rather than being guided through the hour as you are in our other Led Classes (Tower, Mat and Reformer). Maximum 4 participants per class.

Old!   Please note that all of our classes have an official length of 55 minutes per class. Some of us tend to run a little over this sometimes, but we are renewing our efforts to stick to this time frame to ensure smooth transitioning between all of our group and Private classes, as well as to provide a much needed short ‘breather’ for the instructors to transition to the next hour. This has always been the case, but sometimes we all ‘forget’ and wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of this – so that you don’t feel ‘shortchanged’ by a class that finishes or starts a couple of minutes off the expected hour. Thank you for your understanding!

New Classes for the New Year

Our apprentice teacher Susan Pierce is offering classes on Sunday and Thursday evenings starting this New Year. Susan has been teaching for a year now at Meridian – and the feedback has been excellent! – so we are pleased to offer new time slots for a 4 week series January 3 to January 27. Classes for both advanced students (more experience with Pilates) and beginning students (new, or fairly new, to Pilates) will both be available. If you are looking to add a new mat or reformer class to your schedule please talk to us at the desk to sign up!

Holiday Schedule Request!

To Our Valued Clients:

It’s that beautiful, busy, celebratory time of year again…! Many of us are starting to look forward to our yearly holiday celebrations and time off, and we would like your help in organizing the upcoming months’ schedules.

We will soon be coming up with our “Holiday Schedule”. During the various Christmas and New Years’ holidays (December 24th to January 2nd), we will not run our ‘usual’ schedule, but instead will offer a condensed version with Private sessions and Groups (on equipment and mat) at times that work for the instructors and clients who are around and would like to come in during this time.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from you, as soon as possible, about your plans for the holiday season, and whether you would be interested in any classes/sessions during that week. From that point forward, we can organize a schedule that works as well as it can for as many people as possible. We expect that we will open December 27, 28, 29 and perhaps the 31st – depending on interest.

There may also be some other changes to certain classes and sessions in the weeks leading up to and following the main holiday times, due to instructor’s holidays, but if your regular class will be affected by this, you will be contacted directly about it.

Traffic snarls, disruption and parking, oh my!

Many of you “may” have noticed (!!) the ‘no parking’ signs, construction in the alley-way and signs of demolition in the building across the street from our entrance on Bayswater. We know that this may be having an impact on your ability to park around here easily and quickly.

All of this disruption is, unfortunately, inevitable, but we would like you to know that the underground parking here, directly below the building, WILL be available for the duration of the disruption. The current city work should be completed as of tonight, but even during this time we are meant to have access to underground parking, except for some short moments when heavy equipment is directly in front of the access to the garage.

We also want to make sure that all of you KNOW that we have underground (pay) parking for this building! The access is from the alley behind us: if access from Bayswater is blocked, please go one block west to Balaclava, and enter beside the fire station (behind Kidsbooks). There should be at least one entry to the alley open at all times.

We do not know how long the demolition and subsequent construction will be happening, but it may be wise to try to leave yourselves a few minutes extra in arriving so that you don’t lose any of your valuable class/session time.

We will keep our fingers crossed that disruptions will be minimal and short-lived!

New! Apprentice Classes Available!

Apprentice Teacher Classes Available!
Starting June, 2012

We are pleased to announce that our Teacher Training program, through Balanced Body Education, is nearing its completion this year. One of our trainees, Susan Pierce, has been diligently practising her teaching on Mat and Reformer and is now ready to offer some apprentice-level classes out of the studio.

If you have been looking for another class to add to your schedule, or if any of your friends or family have been interested in giving Pilates a try, you can give us a call or an email. These classes will be offered at a lower rate than our regular classes, and will periodically be supervised to help Susan develop her skills.

The Fine Print

We ask that anyone joining these classes be relatively free from injury or serious physical conditions. Minor aches/pains and stiffness are fine; Pilates will help with exactly this! (If you are not sure whether you fit within this requirement, give us a call or email and we will help you assess.) We will also ask that anyone new to Pilates book in for one Private Intake/Evaluation session with Susan before the start of the series (see below for prices).

These classes will run as an 8-week series, beginning the week of June 4th. They will be offered at the following dates and times (all classes run 1 hour):


Mat Level 1/2: 5pm

Mat Level 1 (beginner): 6pm


Reformer Level 1 (beginner): 4pm

Reformer Level 1/2: 5pm


Reformer Level 1/2: 8:50am

We hope that this will be an attractive option for some of you to get a new class in, or to help facilitate someone beginning on a new journey into Pilates!

New! Core Align is ready and rolling!

Those of you in the studio regularly may have noticed two new additions to the studio equipment. On our east wall, we now have 2 Core Aligns installed. The Core Align is a relatively new tool in use for upright, functional strengthening. Developed by a Physio from Israel, Jonathan Hoffman, the equipment was developed specifically to improve the functioning of our upright, vertical standing posture by providing an unstable base and feedback through the hands and the feet. It demands that the whole body tap into its own innate intelligence to sort through alignment and strength challenges. It is amazingly accessible and useful work and most newcomers feel able to get a bit of a workout going – safely – within a very short time of using it. We have several teachers now who have done the basic training and can offer sessions using this. Private lessons or duets are the way to go with this (we only have 2!), and if you are interested, please contact us to set up a lesson time.

Pre- and Post-Natal Sessions with Nikki

Pregnancy and the early days, weeks and months of new motherhood are incredible times of change – so much so that it often feels like we have an entirely new body. While we know that we eventually settle into a ‘new normal’, it is useful and downright sanity-saving sometimes to have a little help transitioning into this new body by increasing your ability to access your core support, strengthen weak muscles and generally maintain your mobility.

Nikki Zekas has been teaching Pilates for over 8 years and specializes in working with women during and after pregnancy. Her love for this special time in a woman’s life is evident in her gentle, yet challenging sessions that help women maintain and develop deeper pathways of core strength and greater awareness of movement to help them stay injury-free.

I love Nikki! She helped me so much during and after my pregnancy. I felt strong and had an easy pregnancy. My back didn’t hurt as much as I hear other moms’ did. After the birth, during my first month’s check up, the doctor was impressed as I did not need perineal exercises (kegel). Four months later I went back to Pilates and found out that my core wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. Feldenkrais Thursdays!

At Meridian Pilates, we believe there are a myriad number of fabulous techniques that enable healthful changes through awareness of movement. Feldenkrais is a wonderful alternative practice and we encourage anyone interested in a new, safe and gentle movement experience to give it a try.

A Feldenkrais group class with Hilary Fuller (‘Awareness through Movement’), will start up this coming Thursday, April 28th from 12pm to 1pm. Hilary verbally guides you in the exploration of fun, gentle, progressive movements.  Using safe and easy-to-follow directions, these classes reduces aches and pains while dramatically increasing ease of movement. The class will run every Thursday and we encourage you to drop on by for the experience!

These specialized sessions are catered to your unique needs. Over the last year or two, we have managed to build a fairly regular supply of balls, rollers and the like that are helpful for those desiring to do some basic exercises at home.
 To make it simple, here is a list of the main things we tend to have in stock at the studio or within an easy order away:

Introductory Feldenkrais Workshop

We are pleased to offer an opportunity to learn about the Feldenkrais Method this coming January:
What it is:
The Feldenkrais Method is designed to help you move with greater comfort, ease and skill. Endorsed by our Canadian Men’s Alpine Ski Team and practiced world-wide, the Feldenkrais Method is perfect for improving athletic performance, easing discomforts and for rehabilitating injuries.
The Feldenkrais Method is expressed in two complementary forms:
 Awareness Through Movement (ATM), ideal for those wanting to find more ease and grace in their lives. These group classes are very effective in helping one to overcome old injuries/limitations, as well as improving one’s walking, skiing, gardening, golfing, paddling…or any other activity which you enjoy. Participants will leave class with better posture and a renewed sense of vitality.
Functional Integration(FI) sessions are specialized, one-on-one lessons that are catered to your unique needs. This intuitive, hands-on approach promotes rapid recovery without manipulatory forces.
Feldenkrais practitioner, Hilary Fuller, came to Feldenkrais after studying a variety of movement/healing arts. He is certified by the North American Feldenkrais Guild (2007) and has been teaching full-time since his certification.  
This introductory workshop is simply that: an opportunity to learn a little more about the method and how or why it may be beneficial for you.

Happy Fall Equinox!

Fall is bringing back a sense of diligence and patience as we prepare ourselves for winter and drop back into a schedule of regularity. Fall can be a very industrious time, and we can tap into that energy for our physical benefit by setting aside time for practice for ourselves. To help you tap into this, we have some new opportunities in the studio, both in the form of new-to-us teachers (see sidebar) as well as new sessions/classes. At the end of this letter, we also have a list of classes that have availability.
Of note: Nikki Zekas is back from New York and is ready to share some of her complementary practices with us here at the studio. Sound Healing with Tibetan Bowls will be offered privately as well as in a group meditation setting on Monday nights.  Nikki will also offer a Developmental Movement series. See below for details and more information on any of these offerings.

Sound stops the illusion and mindless chatter of our busy minds, putting us directly back into alignment with the universal flow of perfection that is our true nature. The Tibetan bowls are a vibrational tool used in ancient healing traditions by Buddhist monks. The sound vibration affects the alpha and theta brain waves, evoking a trance-like state and a deep feeling of relaxation where healing can take place. They are an effective vehicle to alter our consciousness from everyday stress to a peaceful and expansive meditative state. One can experience shifts in perception of space, sense of peace, tranquility and balance, chakra balancing, energy synchronization, accentuated clarity of mind and body as well as enhanced creativity.
