I started doing Pilates because it was a way to become strong and lean like a dancer (whom I’ve always admired for their strength and grace) and I kept reading about Pilates in Vogue Magazine.  Little did I know what I had truly discovered.  The knowledge I’ve learned from Pilates has been crucial in understanding my body, adapting to becoming older, and truly understanding my injuries and imbalances in my body and how I can genuinely solve them long-term. There’s nothing like a back injury to understand how profound the importance of the spine truly is.  And Pilates works.  I never would have dealt successfully with my injuries without it.  I’m always amazed at the endless variations of techniques and exercises that my instructor can come up with.  I was one of the original clients at Meridian and after 10 years, I am still learning and growing and being challenged and getting stronger and understanding my body better.  There are many of us long-term clients.  The instructors are universally incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely nice people who will lovingly extend your boundaries and make sure you do the exercise correctly.  I have never heard anyone belittled in all my time in the studio – which unfortunately sometimes happens in fitness studios, especially to women who are not used to being physical and are a bit intimidated.  My fellow clients are genuinely nice and interesting people too.  We all have fun together in our classes.  Yes, Pilates costs money, but the money I save by making my own lunch, muffins and coffee instead of buying takeout, I spent on Pilates. It’s a very good bargain for me.

As a 61 year old woman I was noticing uncomfortable changes in my body such as tight muscles, very little flexibility and maybe a detachment with my physical self. Upon returning to Meridian Pilates after a 3 year break I began to feel the connection again very quickly. I now move differently, I carry myself more confidently and my body core is so much stronger. I have tried many disciplines over the years such as aerobics, running, etc. but pilates is the path that seems to incorporate the grace of dance, the strength-training of weights and the flow of yoga. I have found all the Instructors at Meridian to be expertly trained, so knowledgeable about the body and how it works, and so encouraging even when I am struggling to get my body to cooperate with the exercise. I am glad to be back.

Who would have ever thought that by changing how I stand and walk that I could find a remedy for my chronically swollen, arthritic knees?  I certainly didn’t know it, but that is exactly what happened to me.   Through private classes with the wonderful teachers at Meridian, I have learned that awareness of my issues begins with the toes and arches, and goes all the way to the top!   The happy result is that I haven’t had a flare up in my knees in over a year.    For me, going to Meridian is the best part of my day.  It is such a warm and inviting space, and the classes are hard work, but fun.  I always leave feeling a few inches taller and straighter, with a smile on my face.

Attending regular pilates at Meridian Pilates Studio has helped me create new and more efficient movement patterns, resulting in improved posture and less pain.  It has greatly improved my foot function such that I do not need to rely on shoe inserts and supportive footwear.  I am very impressed with the level of teaching and have no hesitation in referring my clients to Meridian for rehabilitation.
